Origins and development
The grounds were established in 1804, with the first burial in 1808. Surviving walls and portals reflect later eastern and northern extensions. The 1870 chapel was beside the former main entrance; the present entrance at Herzogenbuscher Straße 8 was added in 1911. The northern chapel has been used since 1962. Historicist and Art Nouveau memorials survive in the older sections.

Design and present-day character
Historic portals, the old chapel of 1870 and the modern northern chapel reveal several layers of Trier’s main cemetery. Its Jewish cemetery section has been part of the grounds since 1920.
Read this character description together with the development of Trier Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.

The cemetery map contains 19 named places for Trier Main Cemetery. Among them are Funeral hall, Ehrenmal, Trier-Nord, An der Hospitalsmühle. Use these names to relate the historical account to locations visible during a visit, without assuming that every historical feature has its own marker.
